What are bioidentical hormones?

While not a medical term, the name bioidentical hormone refers to any hormone which is molecularly identical to the hormones that our bodies make. “Bioidentical hormone” was a term coined in the early 2000s to differentiate these molecularly identical hormones from synthetic hormones, which are not an exact replica of our natural hormones.

Although natural, bioidentical hormones are still considered prescription medications and are both commercially available from your pharmacy, or can be compounded in doses or formulas that are not commercially available by a compounding pharmacy.
